What do I hook a anti static wrist strap to?
Hello. I am adding ram to my computer. I heard that you take the case off and can clip the strap to it. But does it need to be on the ground? If so, my ground is carpet, is that ok? Please tell me other ways to do this as well.
Carpet is bad, as it holds static charges like no tomorrow. Place the computer case on your kitchen table or desk – something (wood) to insulate against static build-up.
Static straps include a wristband; place around your wrist against your skin. Don’t place wristband on top of clothing.
Attach the end of the static strap (via alligator clip?) to something metal within your computer chasis anywhere you don’t see paint. A bolt or nut is a great option especially those that attach your PCI/AGP add-on cards to the expansion area.
Lastly – still take care handling your new memory by gripping it by the end/corners of the card opposite the connections. Don’t touch the connection pins, or memory chips.
