Cheap Leather Sofas for Sale: What’s the Difference?
Leather sofas come in many different sizes, styles, and price points. And while leather sofas have reputation of being more durable than fabric-upholstered sofas, there are several different grades of leather that vary widely in quality and price. So before shopping for a leather sofa, you may want to learn a bit about leather so you’ll be better prepared to compare values.
The highest quality leather upholstery is made from full grain leather. It is neither sanded nor processed, leaving the markings and natural grain of the hide complete. This form of leather is the most durable, and is generally considered the most attractive. It’s also the most expensive.
Top grain leather is made from the outer layer of the hide. It is usually processed or sanded to hide imperfections, and may be textured as it is processed to imitate a more exotic hide.
Split grain is made from the inner layer of the hide. It may be labeled “genuine leather” but it is not as strong or durable as top grain or full grain.
Finally, bonded leather is made from leather scraps bonded together to appear as a single piece. Bonded leather has neither the quality nor the strength of a real hide.
There are also sofas made of “faux” leather, which isn’t leather at all. “Faux” translates to “false” or “fake”. This upholstery is a vinyl or plastic made to look like leather.
Another big difference in leathers is in how they are prepared and finished. There are three basic finishing styles: aniline, semi-aniline, and pigment.
Aniline dyes are the highest quality finishes. They help protect your leather sofa from fading, stains, and scratches, and develop a mellow patina as they age.
Semi-aniline dyes are less protective. And pigmented color is a surface color applied to a cheaper grade of hide. It may be recognized by its stiffness in comparison to full grain aniline dyed leather.
